Why are blood tests usually advised?
Following a consultation, and taking into account history of symptoms and detailed background medical history, blood testing is often advised to get a picture of your health and to support management of symptoms. Hampshire Health and Hormones has partnered with Nationwide Pathology service for private blood testing.
Which tests may be advised?
Recommended blood tests will be advised following a consultation. Examples of tests include:
General health check 1 blood count, inflammatory markers, diabetes, lipid screen, detailed thyroid check, vitamin D, iron profile, vitamin B12, folate, uric acid £102.50
General health check 2 as above plus renal and liver function £140
Hormone/PCOS profile testosterone, SHBG, LH, FSH, prolactin, oestradiol, thyroid, lipids, HbA1c £90

Do I need tests to diagnose perimenopause or menopause?
For women in their 40s and over, blood testing for FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) is not usually indicated to support a diagnosis of peri-menopause or menopause. However, it is not uncommon to have other causes of symptoms such as low testosterone, thyroid disease, nutritional deficiencies, other hormonal imbalances and more, and blood testing for other causes will often be advised. For younger women NICE advises blood testing to diagnose premature ovarian insufficiency (POI).
Note that blood testing for peri-menopause can often be normal, particularly in the earlier stages. If peri-menopause is likely then a trial of HRT may still be indicated.
Which tests are required for testosterone medication?
There are guidelines about when testosterone medication may be indicated. Usually a baseline blood test for testosterone and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) is performed. If testosterone is prescribed then a monitoring testosterone test would be taken around 2-2.5 months later followed by a review.
Maintenance blood tests are required every 6-12 months if continuing on testosterone, or earlier if there is any change to the dose.

To book a blood test you call Nationwide Pathology on 01858 571322, and they will advise on options for locations or home visiting phlebotomists if available in your area.
NB A consultation is required prior to a blood test to ascertain most suitable tests for you and to put your details onto the booking system.
How do I pay for blood tests?
You will receive an electronic invoice from Hampshire Health and Hormones for the blood test which is due in advance of your test. There is no payment made at the test location.
Is there any other information that I need to know prior to a test?
You will be advised on whether you need to fast before the test (no food and drink apart from water for 12 hours before the test), or if you need an early morning test (such as for cortisol), or whether you need to pause supplements prior to the test.
