I am Dr. Katie, a GP and certified lifestyle medicine doctor with expertise in hormone health. Whether you are struggling with  hormone imbalances, experiencing health symptoms as a result of stress or lifestyle factors, or seeking to enhance your long-term health, my goal is to offer compassionate, comprehensive care tailored to your needs, helping you to feel like yourself again.

While I do prescribe HRT (if indicated for menopause), my practice emphasises a personalised and holistic approach, and getting to the root cause of symptoms. I aim to empower my patients with the knowledge and tools they need to feel their best, combining conventional medicine with science-backed lifestyle strategies.

I am member of the Menopause Society and Lifestyle Medicine Society. When not at work, I can be found with my husband watching my 2 cheeky boys on the playing fields, running across the Hampshire countryside or on the water!

Frequently Asked Questions

Are consultations online?

Consultations are online, however if a face to face consultation is required, this can be arranged at Spire Hospital, Chalybeate Close, Southampton SO16 6UY.

Why might your hormones be out of balance?

There are natural fluctuations in our hormones such as puberty, menopause and peri-menopause, but an overall hormone balance is vital to a healthy mind and body. Our hormone levels are linked to factors such as our diet, sleep health, levels of exercise, body weight, stress levels and gut health. Toxins in the body or an erratic lifestyle can have a noticeable, negative effect on hormone balance. Genetic factors can play a role. Changes in this delicate balance of hormones may result in symptoms. There are also conditions such as endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome and thyroid disease which are as a result of hormonal imbalance.

Are any tests recommended?

A detailed history is taken and symptoms are considered. Dr Hodgkinson will advise if any blood tests are recommended to aid in the diagnosis and management of symptoms. This can include tests such as for thyroid hormones, vitamins and minerals, cortisol, sex hormones or tests for other markers which can contribute to symptoms if they are out of range.

Please bring copies of any blood tests that you have had in the past 12 months.

Blood tests may also be required for monitoring such as for testosterone levels if testosterone replacement therapy is indicated.

Blood samples are not taken at the Hampshire Health and Hormones clinic. You will be advised about options regarding where to go for this during your first appointment. Following your initial blood test analysis, further tests may be advised.

Do I need blood tests to help diagnose perimenopause or menopause?

For women aged 45 and over, blood testing is not usually indicated to support a diagnosis of perimenopause or menopause, and is not required to starting HRT. However, it is not uncommon to have other causes of symptoms alongside those associated with changes in levels of oestrogen and progesterone, such as low testosterone, thyroid disease, nutritional deficiencies, other hormonal imbalances and more.

Note that blood testing for perimenopause can often be within normal range, particularly in the earlier stages. If perimenopause is likely then a trial of HRT may still be indicated.

How are hormone imbalances managed?

The management will depend on the cause of symptoms. Everyone is different.

Diet and lifestyle will have a significant impact on your health including the balance of your hormones. Dr Hodgkinson will give tailored and generic detailed advice on any suggested changes to diet and lifestyle, and may suggest supplements to support symptom management.

If indicated for peri-menopause or menopause, treatment options including hormone replacement therapy (HRT) will be discussed. If any medication is prescribed, with consent, a letter will be provided for your GP to keep them informed.
